Three University of Hawaii at Hilo students who graduated from Hawaii Island high schools were awarded the Gertrude E. McVickar Endowed Excellence Scholarship for 2017-18.

Three University of Hawaii at Hilo students who graduated from Hawaii Island high schools were awarded the Gertrude E. McVickar Endowed Excellence Scholarship for 2017-18.

• Lauren Mizuba, a junior linguistics major and graduate of Hilo High School, is attending Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka, Japan.

• Vernon Warnock, a senior chemistry major and Hilo High graduate, also is attending Seinan Gakuin University and will attend Rikkyo University in Tokyo during the spring 2018 semester.

• Chrisovolandou Gronowski, a senior psychology major and chemistry minor who graduated from Pahoa High and Intermediate School, is attending Anglo-American University in the Czech Republic.

The McVickar Endowed Excellence Scholarship was created in memory of Gertrude E. McVickar, who believed that all students should be encouraged to participate in international exchange programs.
